Begin with a support contact

The National Council on Problem Gambling’s helpline page explains ways to connect with gambling-related help in the United States. You can ask about local services, what a first contact involves, and options that fit your circumstances. The page also serves people concerned about someone else’s gambling.

You do not need to prepare a complete financial history before looking up a service. Useful questions include: Who is eligible? Is there a charge? Is support available remotely? What information would I need to provide? Confirm the answers with the provider rather than assuming every service works the same way.

Check the self-exclusion options where you bet

Self-exclusion and deleting an app are different actions. For example, the Massachusetts Gaming Commission’s program offers a sports-wagering exclusion covering Massachusetts-licensed operators. That is a jurisdiction-specific program, not a national rule.

Look for the official regulator or program serving your location. Before enrolling, read its current coverage and terms: which operators and types of gambling are included, how long the exclusion lasts, and how enrollment works. Ask the program directly about anything unclear. Do not assume one registration covers every state, country, website or account.

Review access on your phone

List the apps and websites you want to restrict. Our iPhone blocking guide explains Apple’s built-in website controls and why specific selections matter.

UrgeShield uses Screen Time to block the apps and websites you select. Its 24-hour delay applies to requests to turn blocking off inside UrgeShield. It is not a guarantee against changes elsewhere on a device or gambling on another device. Blocking is one practical tool; the app does not replace professional treatment.

Keep spending estimates separate from records

If a rough number would help you organize your thoughts, the gambling loss calculator can illustrate what a weekly amount adds up to. It cannot establish what you actually lost or what you will save. Statements and account records serve a different purpose from an estimate.

For concerns about bills or debt, ask a qualified local service about appropriate support. Avoid making a repayment plan from a website calculator alone.

Choose a concrete next step

You might open the support page, read your local exclusion terms, or make a list of phone restrictions to configure. These are options for organizing the next task, not a prescribed recovery sequence. There is no universal deadline for feeling better or proof of progress that everyone must meet.

If you are unsure why betting has started to concern you, read signs that gambling may be causing problems. If you are helping someone else, our friends and family guide focuses on support for both of you.
